SUMMARY:Madeleine Smith-Champion\, la bienfaitrice
DESCRIPTION:Prenant prétexte des Journées Européennes du Patrimoine les 16 et 17 septembre prochain\, la Maison Nationale des Artistes\, établissement de la Fondation Nationale des Arts Graphiques et Plastiques\, consacre son exposition de rentrée à l’une de ses deux donatrices\, la peintre Madeleine Smith-Champion (1864-1940). \nDès 1887\, Madeleine Smith-Champion commence à peindre. Elle intègre l’atelier de Jean-Jacques Henner\, l’un des rares artistes à enseigner à des femmes qui\, à l’occasion\, lui servent de modèles. Elle participe en 1889 au Salon de la Société des Artistes Français et reçoit la médaille de bronze en 1891 pour sa Jeanne d’Arc. Par la suite\, Madeleine Smith-Champion expose régulièrement dans ce même Salon. Lors de l’Exposition Universelle de 1900\, elle présente plusieurs de ses œuvres. Décorée de la Légion d’honneur en 1920 pour l’hôpital militaire qu’elle anime pendant la première guerre dans sa maison du 16\, elle  reprend son activité de peintre qui avait été mise à l’arrêt pendant cette période et se consacre aux portraits et aux nus de femmes qui seront chaque année exposés au Salon jusqu’en 1939. Elle peint\, par ailleurs\, sans relâche des études du parc qui ne seront pas montrées. \nL’exposition qui lui est consacrée cet automne présente ainsi différentes œuvres emblématiques de l’artiste. \nMadeleine Smith\, son époux Pierre Champion (1880-1942) et sa soeur Jeanne Smith\, photographe (1857-1943)\, lèguent en 1913 à la Bibliothèque Nationale l’importante collection de l’oncle des deux sœurs\, Auguste Lesouëf. Puis\, à leurs décès respectifs\, l’Etat reçoit en donation leurs deux demeures mitoyennes pour y accueillir les artistes démunis. Dès 1945\, la Maison Nationale des Artistes est ainsi créée et le peintre Guy Loë en devient le premier directeur. \nFemme artiste\, Madeleine Smith-Champion s’est donc également distinguée par son action philanthropique qui perdure et se retrouve aujourd’hui dans les différentes missions exercées quotidiennement par la Fondation des Artistes. \n      #bwg_container1_0 #bwg_container2_0 .bwg_masonry_thumb_0 {        text-align: center;
