Au terme de science-fiction que l’on a souvent utilisé pour qualifier son œuvre\, l’auteur préférait pourtant celui de Real Fiction car traçant les géométries d’un réel augmenté et inventoriant les rapports entre les mythologies modernes\, les communications de masse et les déformations de la technologie.\nAvec cinquante ans de distance\, l’exposition Real Fictions/Naufragé·e·s s’intéresse à des œuvres et des démarches dans lesquelles gravitent des personnages toujours reclus dans des îlots similaires à ceux anticipés par le romancier. Ceux-ci y apparaissent souvent isolés\, mentalement ou physiquement\, ou tels des voyageurs sédentaires animés par un mouvement incessant mais vain. Aux thèmes habituels et à la « périurbanisation du monde » qui traversent les romans de Ballard\, les œuvres répondent par autant de situations rejoignant la marche d’une modernité de plus en plus brutale et chaotique.
