L’imaginaire propre au cinéma (film\, caméra\, processus argentiques\, montage) infuse l’ensemble de sa démarche artistique. \nSon œuvre est considérée comme unique\, développant un univers sensible qui ne s’apparente à « aucun mouvement\, à aucune école encore en place ». \nSa recherche du vivant s’exprime par le film et la vidéo\, la peinture\, la photographie\, le dessin et l’imprégnation quasi-alchimique de papiers par des matières organiques : sel\, citron\, miel. \nSon parcours est marqué par des expositions de référence à l’ARC\, au Centre Pompidou\, à la Documenta de Kassel\, au Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris\, etc. Il représente la France à la 48e Biennale de Venise en 1999. En 2019\, le Centre Pompidou lui consacre une exposition posthume\, Diamon’D\, à l’occasion de la donation de l’ensemble de sa production cinématographique et vidéographique. Depuis lors son travail est régulièrement présenté dans des expositions personnelles ou collectives. \nConçue comme un story-board\, séquence après séquence\, cette présentation propose une traversée de l’œuvre de Jean-Pierre Bertrand à partir de motifs et matériaux fondamentaux : le sel et le phénomène argentique\, le citron et le voyage de Robinson Crusoé\, le miel\, mais aussi les processus de transformation qui traversent l’ensemble de son travail. \nNina Rodrigues-Ely est critique d’art\, membre de l’Aica-France\, et directrice de l’Observatoire de l’art contemporain.
